Mike Sullivan, Brian Cook, and David Turncrantz are making some of the best heavy music I’ve ever heard. I’m not saying that lightly either. Maybe it’s because I don’t listen to things like this very often anymore, but this is really amazing. When things fade out on Russian Circles’ songs, my mind is blown. How is this so interesting? This is drone metal.
I would want to hear this in a small room, but Russian Circles has played at places as huge as Bonnaroo (perhaps where a large part of the 34,000 fans came from). They’ve toured with Minus the Bear, Coheed & Cambria, Pelican, Boris, and Isis. I would really just want to see them in the basement of a mid-sized house though. This would seriously knock people down. I’m lucky enough to have a nice pair of studio monitors, and I’m playing them way louder right now than my housemates can probably appreciate.
I could sit here and listen to their most recent album “Empros” over and over again. Especially the first track, “309”. This is the thickest bass guitar tone I’ve heard in a long time. Seriously. I’ve you have ever enjoyed anything heavier than a feather, check this band out. It’s the opposite of disappointing. Make sure you have something good to listen with.
